CONSERVATION PROJECTS

Saturday, July 10th the Spokane Fly Fishers will work on two conservation
projects.  If we have enough volunteers we'll split our work force and
work on both projects at the same time.  The bank stabilization of the
Middle Fork of Calispell Creek will be the most labor intensive.  We
will put up a barbwire fence and possibly clear some brush.  This area
of the Middle Fork runs through beautiful meadows.  The meadows and
creek banks have been damaged by motorcycles and 4 wheelers,
unauthorized camping and to a lesser degree by cattle crossing the
creek.  Some work has been done to improve the damage.  The SFF
contribution is one part in the successful rehabilitation of this site.
The Middle Fork of Calispell Creek is a fish habitat.  Brook trout are
present.  The creek runs into nearby Power Lake, which bears
investigation for fishing possibilities.

We will also refurbish the fish viewing platform and information signs
at the inlet to Brown's Lake.  Some of the lettering on the large signs
needs replacing as does one sheet of plexiglass.  The signs will be taken
down and repaired before July 10th.  We will replace the signs in their
frames and possibly do some sanding and sealant work on the platform on
the 10th.

If there are enough workers, one group will meet at the Middle Fork Site
and the other at Brown's Lake campground at 9:00 Saturday morning.

Creek workers will need: work gloves, foot wear and clothes suitable for
working in brush, Brown's Lake workers will need: work gloves.  Both
groups will need a lunch & drinks.

Directions to the Middle Fork of Calispell Creek
From Spokane go north on the Newport Highway (US 2) to the junction with
State Highway 211 (past Eloika Lake and before Diamond Lake).  Turn Left
on 211, you will pass Sasheen and Davis Lakes, approximately 1 mile
beyond Davis and just past the 11-mile marker turn left on West
Calispell Road.  Go Approximately 4.6 miles to the Middle Fork Rd. turn
left; you will go up a steep hill.  Proceed about 5.7 miles to the work
site; it is to the left of Forest Road 3540.

Directions to Brown's Lake
Follow the Calispell Creek directions but do not turn on the West
Calispell Road.  Continue on State Highway 211 to the junction with
State Highway 20. Turn left on 20 for a very short distance.  Turn right
at the restaurant and go to Usk.  Cross the Pend Oreille River.  This is
Kings Lake Road.  The road is paved and then turns to gravel.. Continue
about 6.25 miles after crossing the bridge.  There is a fork to the
left, turn left.  The sign will say Half moon and Brown's Lake continue
to Brown's Lake campground.

If you would like to camp Saturday night and enjoy a potluck dinner
(SFF will furnish the main dish you bring salad or dessert) and some
fishing at Brown's Lake this is also on the agenda.  Be warned there is
no running water at the campground so plan to pack in you H2O.

If you haven't signed up to help and want to volunteer, please call Judy
Kaufman.
