Updated Fishing Reports--August 2003

I went down to the Tri-Cities last weekend and fished above McNary, LoMo, and Ice Harbor (after Pres Bush was there).  Saturday(8/23/03) we had the river above LoMo to ourselves and I caught several feisty 12 inch small mouths on my 4 wgt  and green wooly bugger.

Our Spokane River Outing had many with nice catches. We mostly fished from Maple Street Bridge down to the water Treatment Plant. Soft hackles on the swing are always a good bet and small Caddis (16-18) worked well. The upper stretch especially near Maribou Point are fishing well also with Small May fly patterns. Roger Bertch has printed up a nice map with some points of interest.

Our St Joe outing ( 8-10 Aug) was a fisherman's dream with many catching nice fish. We fished mostly near Fly Flat CG about three miles on the upper river road. Small caddis and mayflies worked well as did the traditional Cutthroat patterns, Stimulators, Humpy's and tarantulas. Time of day didn't seem to matter. The St. Joe is a bit less sensitive to temperature because of the shade, but still keep in mind the health of the fish.

I did tracking and tagging with the Idaho Fish and game and the Forrest service on the 28th and 29th. of August. We tracked fish in the lower river, Enaville to Cataldo on Thursday and I was amazed at the number of fish! We saw an early hatch of caddis (14-16 Goddard) and a good rise. Most of the fish were in the deeper runs and good candidates for nymphs. I've always heard about the lower river, but had no idea what a nice looking place it is. This would make a great float, but try and get out near the Freeway as the water really slows down the last mile or so. I'll try and get some more put in and take out information shortly. The water temp is on the warm side so try not to stress the fish. On Friday Matt Davis with the Forest Service and I fished near the confluence of the Little N. Fork and picked up a couple smaller fish on Hopper and ant patterns. The larger ones were holding in the deep runs with no intention of feeding. We're going to try later in the evening when there might be a hatch coming off. The Little N. Fork is really low! The fish were tightly bunched in very heavy cover. We hooked a couple smaller fish in the few shaded runs, but need to fish it later in the day. Again, very warm water 17c (65f) so the fish are easily stressed
